Irrigation in QLD
Broadacre irrigated cropping in Queensland is conducted on around 500,000 ha by 5,400 irrigators. The volume of irrigation water applied is around 2.5 million megalitres. The gross value of broadacre irrigated production in Queensland is around $2 billion annually (this is around 61 per cent of the broadacre cropping gross value of agricultural production within the state) .
Surface irrigation is used on around 45 percent of the irrigated area, with sprinkler irrigation used on 44 percent and micro-irrigation (surface and sub-surface drip, trickle and microspray) on 11 percent of the irrigated area. In recent years there has been an significant increase in the area irrigated with centre pivot and lateral irrigation systems – in 2013-14 this form of irrigation was used on 12 percent of the irrigated area (61,000 ha).
